How to Sex Black Rams

If you know about sexing rams, you'll know the most common method is by identifying the females pink belly. This simple method is a surefire way to quickly spot German Blue Rams and Electric Blue Rams, but what do you do if they're completely black?

I've seen people all over the internet look at fin lengths or if you become skilled enough, you can base their sex off of body shape. I have the easiest method that anyone can do, no matter their experience.

3 Month old, female Black Ram

In the photo's I have provided you'll see two of my Black Rams, they are both juveniles, approximately 2-3 months old, they are still going to both double in weight before they are fully grown.

This is the easiest age to sex them.

You'll see the most distinct feature of the female on full display, the blue spangles. While males, can have some of these spangles, mostly on the fins and sometimes on the body, the female will have them all along their body.

As they reach maturity the visibility of these spangles will decrease. Don't worry, they are still there, simply shine a flashlight along their body and they will become easily visible again.
